Why a photo book about Cuba?
I have been taking photographs for several years and recently I have been passionate about street photography, of which I appreciate the possibility of capturing reality as it is, in its authenticity. On the occasion of a recent trip to Cuba, I decided to take some time to shoot in the streets of Havana. I wondered if, having little time available, I could go beyond a few tourist postcard-like shots. I shot a lot and in a short time, trying to always be friendly and discreet. Cuba is a place that seems out of time, where people are proud of their history but also of their present life, even when it means living in conditions of poverty. I walked into houses where everything seems to be missing except the sympathy and the desire to exchange a few words. I returned home with many shots and I thought I would like to collect them not only digitally: I am convinced that photography has its natural destination in print. That's why I wanted to make a photo book with a selection of my favorite photographs. Trying to make a book forced me to do a different job: choosing the little to keep and the much to leave. Try to create a coherent story. Deciding how to lay out and evaluate the quality of binding and printing. With this work, I certainly do not pretend to tell Cuba in an exhaustive way but only to show some interesting shots of what I have seen. A small selection is also available online here.
